Indian Railways (IR) in a bid to maintain and improve the standards of cleanliness and amenities in trains has now implemented ‘ On-Board House Keeping Service’ (OBHS) in Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto and all important Mail/Express trains for frequent cleaning of coach toilets, doorways, aisles and passenger compartments and also for replenishment of liquid soap and spraying of air fresheners.
Further, to wash linens, mechanized laundries have been set up at important stations. K H Muniyappa, Minister of State for Railways Muniyappa said “ Besides intensive mechanised cleaning of rakes in the coaching depots through professional agencies, limited mechanised cleaning attention to the identified trains during their scheduled stoppage at nominated en route ‘Clean Train Stations’, comprehensive pest and rodent control in trains through professional agencies are also being carried out.”
According to the information revealed by Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed, Indian Railways, which offers an all economy meal called ‘Janata Khana’, sell over 1.4 lakh Janata Meals through refreshment rooms, food plazas and other catering stalls on an average day. Furthermore, to improve the railway catering system, a new catering policy 2010 has been issued.
