To develop Mumbai’s suburban railway system, the World Bank has approved a $430-million loan (Rs 2,000-odd crores) for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)’s 2A project.
The additional funds for the project which is expected to cost Rs 5,300 crore will be raised together by the state government and the Indian Railways who will also share the cost of the project on a 50:50 basis.
The 2A project, which is the first part of the MUTP II, includes the procurement of rakes for the suburban railways; the building of a fifth and sixth line from CST- Kurla; the building of a fifth and sixth line from Thane-Diva; a sixth line from Mumbai Central -Borivali; station improvement, and rehabilitation of families.  MUTP II main objective is to bring about an improvement in the traffic and transport scenario of Mumbai.
