Several No Development Zones (NDZ) will be converted into Tourism Development Zones (TDZ) by the Maharashtra government. The government has also decided to double the existing Floor Space Index (FSI) for buildings in these areas, thus ensuring a bright future for the hotel industry in Maharashtra.
Some of the areas that were earlier categorized as NDZ are Gorai (Essel World), Aarey Colony, parts of Malad west, Malwani, Northern Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.  According to the notification issued by the urban development department of Maharashtra, the Tourism Zones consist of parks, gardens, recreation grounds, private gardens and private recreation grounds making it clear that henceforth new commercial projects coming up on these plots could enjoy the benefit of the proposed FSI. The permanent structures that are identified as no development zones will not be allowed on a plot, according to the norms.
