Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) in order to cater to the increasing passenger traffic has now unveiled Rs 1,000 crore terminal one expansion plan. The expansion, expected to be completed within the period of 18 months, will be funded by a 70:30 per cent debt equity ratio.
Sanjay Reddy, MD, BIAL said, “The new expanded terminal one will have 83 check in counters. The number of baggage reclaim belts will be enhanced from nine to 13 and seating arrangements from 2300 to 5300. There will be 15 Code C and seven Code E boarding gates in place of the present eight Code C and four Code E gates. Provision also had been made to develop a Code F Board for Airbus 380 in future.”
BIAL which is considered as the fourth busiest airport in India after Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai has been recently adjudged as ‘The Best Emerging Airport of the Indian Subcontinent’ by the Emerging Markets Airport Awards (EMAA) as voted by the Aerospace Industry. The airport that handled about 9.3 million passengers in the year 2009 is expected to handle 17 million passengers in the year 2015. During the upcoming CWG (Commonwealth Games), BIAL will have a special counter for guests.
