Kerala’s well-renowned Idukki Dam will soon be turned into a tourism spot as District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has chalked out plans to set up a garden similar to Malampuzha, a rock garden, watch tower, tourist restaurant and other amenities under the Idukki Dam Site Tourism Project. According to the information given by M Rajesh, Secretary, DTPC, the beautification is expected to begin on August 27th.

Rajesh said, “The Rs 4.94 crore Union government aided project is being implemented with a view to open Idukki dam permanently for visitors. At present, Idukki and Cheruthoni dams are opened for public only during festival seasons and special occasions. The area lying below the arch dam near the Ceruthoni-Kattappana road will be used for setting up the main facilitation centre “.

Further as a part of the project, an artificial fountain will also be developed near the Hill View Park owned by the DTPC. A boat jetty, lighting facilities and an information centre will also be developed at the park area. Idukki Dam considered as one of the highest dams in the world and the first arch dam in India stands tall between 2 mountains- Kuravanmala (839 feet) and Kurathimala (925 feet).
