The high altitudes, the pleasant climate, the
shimmering lakes, the blossoming beauties and snow clad peaks make for a
paradisiacal hill resort. The uneven terrain of India has given it an
advantage of many such scenic spots all over the country. Himalayas of
course have the most of the highest peaks and were formed when India
pushed against the Asia mainland with great force. Besides Jammu and
Kashmir, Leh and Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, even the southern half of
India boasts of beauteous Nilgiris, the Blue Mountains. The confluence
of three mountain streams Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala at Munnar,
1600 m above sea level, made it the first choice as a summer resort of
the British South India during the Raj period. The tea plantations and
blue flowers that carpet the surrounding hills once in 12 years are the
chief attractions here along with trekking to Anamudi and panoramic
views that it offers.
Nainital was once known as City of 60 lakes ('Chakta') but now there is
little to be seen of those so-called lakes and life revolves around
shimmering Naini Lake. Lord Barron discovered Nainital in 1841 and its
weather, surroundings and aura so charmed the administrator that he
turned it into the Summer Capital of the United Province. Other hill
resort of Kumaon that has won many hearts is Almora with its virgin
natural beauty, small houses, steep slopes and people dressed in bright
cheerful colors. Along with green pastures and snow-covered peaks,
Shimla also offers rich colonial heritage. Dharamsala is known more as a
base camp for the trekkers with dramatically set Dhauladhar mountains as
the backdrop and as the home of Tibetan spiritual and political Buddhist
leader Dalai Lama. Dense pine trees, Deodar forests, healthy climate and
the situation near snowline make Dharamsala a favored destination among
the tourists. Besides these hill resorts, there are various others in
India that offers one with exotic views and numerous opportunities for
adventure enthusiasts including skiing, heli-skiing, skydiving,
hand-gliding, paragliding, trekking, bicycling, white-river rafting,
mountaineering and rock-climbing.
