As Mahabalipuram is situated ashore the Bay of
Bengal, it experiences Tropical climate. The summer sets in the month of
April and persists till mid-June. The average maximum temperature in
summers hovers around 35-38°C. The nights are relatively cooler due
to its proximity to the sea. The humidity during the summers remains
around 55 to 65% and that makes Mahabalipuram very unpleasant during
late evenings.
The northeast branch of Monsoon arrives in mid-June and that marks the
onset of rainy season in Mahabalipuram. As Mahabalipuram lies on the
coast, it rains a lot here. The average annual rainfall is around 800
millimeters. The average humidity remains around 90%.
November sees the onset of winter in peninsular India but unlike North,
the swing in temperature is minimal. Days are very pleasant and nights
cool. Average minimum temperature remains around 20°C.
