Tipping, like in many other countries, is quite
common in India. Gujarat is one of the most vibrant states and is famous
for its warm hospitality. It offers a number of world class facilities
to its visitors. Therefore, one is expected to give tips at some places.
For this, one should know the tipping rules and guidelines to be
followed. The tipping depends on the kind of services you are availing.
At some places, it is optional, while at some places, you are bound to
give tips, like at high-end hotels, restaurants and taxi drivers.
When staying in a hotel, you are expected to give tips to the
waiters serving you. The amount varies around 10-15 percent of your
bill. However, if you are dining in a restaurant, the tip varies
from 10 to 20 rupees.
In hotels, the tip should also be given to the porter as well as
the room service personnel, attending you.
While hiring a taxi for a number of days, tip between 50 and 100
rupees should be given to the driver.
If you are a part of a conducted tour or in case you are hiring a
tourist guide for yourself, then make sure you give a tip to the
tourist guide.
When staying at someone's house, at times, it is expected to give
tip to his or her domestic servants before leaving. In such a case,
do consult your host regarding the amount.
When traveling by train, railroad porters are not given tips.
They charge a certain amount, which is according to the luggage.
Make sure you fix the rate before hand to avoid conflict.
